It’s been a year since I launched Laurinda On Leadership! What an adventure it’s been learning all about social media. I started out 2009 wanting to grow my speaking career. A mentor of mine suggested I write a book. “Just write a small book, get an ISBN and self-publish” he said. It didn’t matter that nobody would buy the book. I would then have the right to say ‘author’ in my speaking bio and have product on the back table.
“Great idea!”, I thought. I decided to see what it would take to get published by a real publisher. One of my favorite authors on leadership is John Maxwell, so I Googled Thomas Nelson, who publishes his books. That search led me to Michael Hyatt’s, CEO of Thomas Nelson, blog. His blog changed my life.
Michael not only writes about how to get published as a first time author, but he also writes about leadership, productivity, social media, the publishing industry and his Christian walk. The journey to get published by a publisher is much different than the self-publishing journey. Part of the journey is starting a blog to create a platform. So I started a blog, became a Twitterer and now I’m on Facebook. I’ve grown as an individual from reading his blog and learned more about the publishing industry. His blog is all that I desire mine to be, but with a different audience.
My target market isn’t necessarily on-line reading blogs through their Google readers – YET. So I’ll be here when they come. I hope to help get professional black women here through my speaking endeavors.
I began as a speaker, who started a blog to become an author to help my speaking career. But now I’m a blogger, who loves to write – still hopes to become an author and will speak to make it all happen.
